The twins behind the duo
Ibeyi, Lisa-Kainde and
Naomi Diaz, have released their debut album which widely consists of what they've deemed
"contemporary negro spirituals". The album, inspired by their love for Yoruba and melodies influenced by slave chants, is deep, soulful, and willing to broach difficult subjects head on such as the loss of their father, conga player
Anga Diaz, and their sister. The track
"Yanira" is actually dedicated to their sister who passed away in 2013. The self-titled debut,
"Ibeyi", showcases their talent
in a contemporary fashion such that it reiterates the need for love and how it defies the space, time, and our very existence.
