Dear Natasha,

I am 26 and recently started a new job that I consider a jump start in my career and a step towards my final goal. It's been only two weeks, and my supervisor has already told me she thinks I am "trying too hard" and "overcompensating for my age." Honestly, I was just excited to come to work and do the best I can. This is just my work ethic.

I have absorbed her criticism and am now being discrete, but my confidence has taken a hit and I'm now wondering if I made the right decision joining this company. I can try to fly under the radar for a few weeks, but internally it is torture. I thought I was hired for my leadership skills and experience, but apparently I am "intimidating."

I have tried not to internalize the criticism and put it in perspective, but I'm really discouraged that traits I have been praised for in the past are currently being picked apart. How do I sort through these feelings and continue to work in a healthy environment where I won't constantly feel slighted? What should my approach be? How much should I tailor who I am to fit their mold?

Sincerely,

Uncertain Employee

Dear Uncertain Employee
Sometimes when starting a new job, it is wise to remain quiet and observe the work environment until you get the "lay of the land" and understand how the company functions before diving in head first. My advice is to continue to be discrete and observant.

If things don't improve, schedule a sit down with your supervisor. Tell her you thought you had been hired for your leadership skills and experience, but if you are coming across to others as abrasive, you need to know so you can work on it. Let her guide you. If things don't improve following this meeting, understand that not all job placements are a good fit and start looking for something that is better suited for your needs and has potential for you to grow.

xoxo,
