Sam Smith, Ariana Grande, & Taylor Swift Lead iHeart Nods

Sam Smith, QUEEN Ari, and TayLORD Swift have topped the iHeartRadio Music Awards nominations list with 5, 4, and 4 nominations, respectively. All 3 managed to score an "Artist of the Year" nomination which is absolutely deserving being that Samsus' "In The Lonely Hour" [review], QUEEN Ari's "My Everything" [review], and TayLORD's "1989" [review] were on my Top Albums of 2014 list [review]. I loved all of their albums and they are heavy in my musical rotation. TBQFH, EVERY single album on that review should be purchased so if you haven't
Other artists that had multiple nominations include KING Bey, Chris Brown, and John Legend. I believe Igloo Australia did as well but
The Second Annual "iHeartRadio Music Awards" will be broadcasted live from the Shrine Auditorium in LA on March 29th.

First Annual "This Year In Music" Review (2014)

Last year's year end review gave way to surprising results. I thought 2013 wasn't lucrative in sales but 2014 surely takes the cake. It had to be the saving grace of America's Sweetheart Taylor Swift that stopped the RIAA from committing musical suicide. I mean, what's the point of having an association to pass out certifications if no album has been worthy of certifying? Hence the changing of the rules and counting streams and records shipped versus just records sold. Honestly, that is a cop out. Surely, artists should strive to earn their certification off merit and not merely loopholes. Clearly it was deemed possible when SLAYlord Swift accomplished it in just one week. But sure. Go ahead. Celebrate the mediocre...which is what the bulk of the releases this year were at best. Last year, sales aside, it was sooo hard for me to narrow it down to just a top 5 that I had to throw in Honorable Mentions. This year I struggled with even choosing a top 5...the pickings were really that slim.
Without a doubt, topping my list for the second year in a row is Ariana Grande with "My Everything" [review]. The growth that she experienced from "Yours Truly" to this album was astounding. She took risks, flitted in and out of genres, and played with her vocal range a lot more. Some of my fave tracks include "Break Your Heart Right Back", "Hands On Me", "My Everything", "Just A Little Bit Of Your Heart" and "You Don't Know Me" but I listen to the album all the way through every time. Even the INTRO slays! Not only that but she shed her squeaky clean Nick image and proved that she can play in the big leagues...she is nobody's Mariah Carey clone and I LOVE it! Dropping two albums so close together had me a bit skeptical at first but now I can't wait to hear more from her. Hopefully she takes a feather out of Rihanna's cap and drops an album every year. I loved #A1 and #A2 and I am more than ready for #A3. Congrats Arianators! You truly have a star on your hands! I'm expecting her to take home the Grammy for Best Pop Album. For sure.
Look at SLAYlord and The Grim Reaper showing the proper respect as demanded by QUEEN Ari.

It took me a minute to get into Luke James' album but it wasn't for naught and not to say that it isn't absolutely GREAT because it is. It just slipped through the cracks of my overloaded schedule but I am so glad that I finally sought it out and reviewed it [review]. "Luke James" is very nearly a tie with "My Everything". I fell in all types of lust with him after this album. It is flawlessly executed and the vocals on this man...LORDT!  I don't think this album got all of the pomp and circumstance that it deserved and still does. It definitely deserved a Grammy nod but I'll accept the Best R&B Song nomination. Best songs on the album have to be "Options", "Exit Wounds", "Stay With Me", "Glass House", "Trouble", and "I Want You". Not to mention I met him at the Republic Records Day Party and he is super sweet and down to earth. He was all like "Hi I'm Luke."
And I was like
There can be no mention of the greatest albums of 2014 without speaking on the male counterpart to Adele aka Sam Smith. "In The Lonely Hour" [review] came for necks this year. He saw Adele exit and swooped in on the opportunity to snatch her crown...and snatch he did. I love "Stay With Me", "Like I Can", "Life Support", and "Make It To Me". I wasn't surprised in the least to find out he had been signed at the wee age of 14. The talent that Sam Smith possesses is truly beyond his years. He's an old soulful son of a something and I am here for every inch of him...musically.
J Cole is everything. He has moved up from last year's Honorable Mention list to the top 5 and it's well deserved. "2014 Forest Hills Drive" [review] is amazing, thought provoking, and a trail blazing album if ever there was one. I appreciate his fire, depth, and all around honesty. It's refreshing in a day and age where celebrities refuse to take a stance on race relations and social injustices that are occurring right before our very eyes for fear of being ostracised and losing fans. But Jermaine spoke up, spoke out, and slayed every one of those coward bitches on the charts. He's the "RAP GOD". Salute!
Last but certainly not least is Nicki Minaj's "The Pinkprint" [review]. This album swooped in at the last minute to take the final spot in my top 5. I already knew she was a contender, what with amazing singles such as "Pills n' Potions", "Bed of Lies", and "Only" but couple that with features from KING Bey and Queen Ariana this album got catapulted to the top of my list, skipping over all of the honorable mentions. I love how emotional this album is. Onika truly put her blood, sweat, and tears into this project. "The Crying Game", "Feeling Myself", "Get On Your Knees", "I Lied", "Grand Piano", and "All Things Go" have my heart but I listen to this album from beginning to end, no skips. All hail EMPRESS RAP GODDESS OF ALL THE LIGHT TOUCHES! She has the female rap game on lock.
I, of course, have to round out my top albums list with a select few honorable mentions. In no particular order: Taylor Swift's "1989" [review], Jeezy's "Seen It All - The Autobiography" [review],  Teyana Taylor's "VII" [review], Chris Brown's "X" [review], and, UNEQUIVOCALLY, Mariah Carey's "Me. I Am Mariah...The Elusive Chanteuse" [review]. I highly doubt I left anything off. This list, in and of itself, was already a stretch. However, everything on this list is definitely worth a listen and if you love them, by all means purchase them! ESPECIALLY my, surprisingly male dominated, top 5!
What were your fave albums of the year that didn't make my list?

Album Review: Taylor Swift - "1989"

Taylor Swift has taken a detour from country and jumped right into the world of pop. This album displays her versatility and growth and is by far her most conservative album to date. Yet all of this is done with a certain lack of originality. And that isn't necessarily a bad thing. It's as if Taylor said "I'm gonna do pop and I'm gonna beat you at your own game. Watch me execute your genre just like you but better." This album was solid. I can listen to it the entire way through -- no skips. And that is RARE. Lest we forget the way Ms. Swift is demolishing the charts. I think she may be coming for every artists' wig right now. Oop.
Check out this "track-by-track" review of "1989":

1. "Welcome To New York"

I can already foresee this track joining the likes of Jay Z and Alicia Keys' "Empire State of Mind" and being overplayed and over utilized for all things New York. Congrats Taylor! Talk shows and morning shows galore! You may have been in that $22M loft for all of a day but you're officially welcome in the Concrete Jungle.
2. "Blank Space"

This is the kind of track that would make both Lana Del Rey and Miley Cyrus proud. She was for sure giving me Lorde tease. This song draws you in but makes you wary all in one. My fave on the album hands down! Taylor executed this track with a pouty exuberance that you could either love or hate. With lyrics like "Boys only want love if it's torture" and "You look like my next mistake" Taylor is staying true to some part of her country roots: tumultuous she woman man hating.
3. "Style"

The "style" of this song is from 1989 and I'm loving it! Taylor can stop the talk rapping that she's doing though. Not a fan of it.
I'm sorry too.

4. "Out Of The Woods"

PERFECTION.
5. "All You Had To Do Was Stay"

I'm really enjoying the pop side of Taylor. The instrumental is amazing and she's doing just enough to carry the song. Kudos. That busy instrumental could've easily overshadowed her vocals.
6. "Shake It Off"

This track is spunky, fun, catchy (it legits get stuck in your head for HOURS), and full of Taylor's outlandishly funny personality. I hate to admit that I love to sing along and dance to this but alas, I do. Sue me. It's hilarious with a corresponding message: FUCK THE HATERS. The video is even funnier.

7. "I Wish You Would"

Yikes! The tempo for this track is all off. The track is overpowering her. I want to like it because the lyrics are EV-VERY-FUCKING-THING! I wish you knew that I'll never forget you as long as I live/I wish you were right here, right now, it's all good/I wish you would

She had me all in my feelings like
8. "Bad Blood"

Hmmm. This track is...relatable. It's the basic bitch version of "Pills n' Potions". So if her fan base is mostly teeny boppers then yes, this is the childish version of having a trifling ass friend. It sounds good for all intensive purposes so I guess that's all that matters.

9. "Wildest Dreams"

I'm a fan of ballads so this makes me happy. It's simple and beautiful. The instrumental sounds like a beating heart. You better slayyyy TAY TAY!
10. "How You Get The Girl"

Annnnnnd we're back to partying! That was quick. I want you for worse or better/I would wait for ever and ever/Broke your heart, I'll put it back together/I would want you for ever and ever
11. "This Love"

Another ballad...YAAASSSSSSSS! And the layered vocals help Taylor's vocals not get swallowed by the simplicity of the track. Honestly, this song would've have been served better by a vocal powerhouse but it's good for what it is.

12. "I Know Places"

I just spoke on her vocal prowess, or lack thereof, and it's strongly pronounced in this track. She's timidly approaching these high notes like she's afraid of testing her range. Well...then change the key of the song. Duh.
13. "Clean"

This is definitely more her speed. Imogen Heap penned TF out of this track. Who doesn't love a multifaceted performer?

14. "Wonderland"

My general rule of thumb is if a track is on the deluxe version then it should be AMAZING. This song is just "ok". Nothing to write home about. I honestly expected so much more especially because John Mayer's "Your Body Is A Wonderland" is probably top 5 songs on Earth. Don't debate me. This is cute though. We found wonderland/You and I got lost in it/And we pretended it could last forever

15. "You R In Love"

Definitely worthy of being a bonus track. Probably my fave track next to "Blank Space". The lyrics, the melody, and the overall atmosphere is just beautiful. I'm absolutely filled with serenity.
16. "New Romantics"

This should've found a place on the album. It is completely in line with the new sound that she is going for. I love it so I'm glad it made the deluxe version. We are too busy dancing/To get knocked off our feet/Baby we're the New Romantics/The best people in life are free
Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this album. Taylor is beautiful, charming, and can clearly deliver bubblegum pop princess like no other. Rest assured that if Taylor wants to take over pop...she probably can. She's already outsold all of your faves with just her first week's sales.

"1989" is online and in stores NOW!
