Big K.R.I.T.'s sophomore release on Def Jam is set on a make-believe planet that represents his subconscious...and so brought forth the world of "Cadillactica" — the deepest thoughts of a king from the country. And he has much to prove following the underwhelming performance of his 2012 release "Live From The Underground". Well one thing is for sure...this album proved that Big K.R.I.T. is one of today's most gifted rappers. All he had to do was create his own universe to show us that this is his world and we're just living in it.
Check out this track-by-track review of "Cadillactica":
We begin the journey into "Cadillactica" with the help of the sexiest navigation I've ever heard. Siri has been put to shame. "Let's create now" the sexy voice insists and create he did. The track goes on to explain the concept of the album drawing parallels between K.R.I.T.'s subconscious and the formation of his home planet. Allow me to use the hues of lunar cools to paint a canvas...I don't know about you but I'm strapped in and ready for this ride. I'm moving to "Cadillactica".
2. "Life"
Tribal drums set the tone as we cruise through space. It gets hard when you're cruising in the dark for that one and only spark. If that's not life then I don't know what is.
3. "My Sub, Pt. 3 (Big Bang)"
This is the third installment of the "My Sub" series that clearly play to Big K.R.I.T.'s love for deafening beats. However, this time, he uses the opportunity to compare his loudspeakers to evolution and the creation of the universe.
4. "Cadillactica"
Title track. Home planet anthem. Connecting to his southern roots and rapping about the typical shit: hoes, cars, and guns...but with a instrumental that keeps you out of this world and on planet "Cadillactica". I think this is my favorite track. He better give me Twista with his flow.
Raphael Saadiq is so damn chill like he took this shit in an entirely different direction. He brought his ass on the planet and said "turn up for what?" and I'm here for his vibe. I mean there are strings and snare drums and I don't even know what to do with myself. The "Soul Food" metaphor is so deep. From family traditions to family dysfunction. Most people don't make love no more, they just fuck and they fight/ What happened to the stay-togethers?/ Die with you, and that means forever/ Grandparents had that kind of bond, but now we on some other shit
6. "Pay Attention" (Feat. Rico Love)
I, for real, thought this song was about a poor neglected girlfriend but he is real life talking about throwing more money at a specific stripper. Sir.
At any rate, the song sounds good no thanks to Rico Love and this tragic ass falsetto though...
I'm sure T.I. is steam pressed that K.R.I.T. referred to himself as the "King of the South". I have it on good faith that he has better things to do than to troll T.I. Besides T.I.'s music is about as relevant as Iggy is authentic but that's neither here nor there. Anywho...K.R.I.T. is just giving it to us 100...I embody the South—the swang, the bang, the soul and the paint and the blues This is a TRUE southern track. I play this in the car like
8. "Mind Control" (Feat. E-40 and Wiz Khalifa)
I was on board but WTF is Wiz even talking about?!? It's a true tragedy when your feature is bombing. Wiz gotta stop smoking man. Why is he talking about seafood and his damn dog?
9. "Standby (Interlude)" (Feat. Kenneth Whalum III)
I'm not typically a fan of interludes but this sax got me feeling like I'm in a poetry joint. He better give me alllllllllll the spoken word tease, no Jhene Aiko.
10. "Do You Love Me For Real" (Feat. Mara Hruby)
Far be it for me to judge Big K.R.I.T.'s obsession with vehicles being that he named his pretend planet after a car and now he's comparing a woman to a car...I mean get in how you fit in homie. His girlfriend has a beautiful voice though. Super old school feel. Gimme 90s tease boo.
11. "Third Eye"
I know I barely know you/but I think you're so amazing. You better get that number in the club! Not mine though. I hate when a dude won't let me be. I don't find my dating pool in the club. However, if somebody was talking to me over an organ and percussion mix that's peaceful and tranquil AF I just might swoon.
12. "Mo Better Cool" (Feat. Bun B, Devin The Dude, and Big Sant)
There are 17 mfers on this track and truth be told I don't know who is who. It's the age old adage: started from the bottom now we here. Cool.
13. "Angels"
The prayers will get us past/The rumbling and the thundering never last. This song touches on the literal and figurative storms that we experience in life that cause us to lose our faith. Or almost. But there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. A guardian angel of sorts. I love it. Such a positive and inspiring message in these hard times. Although...you were just talking about how you got it made. Fight me, bitch.
14. "Saturday's a Celebration" (Feat. Jamie N Commons)
Jamie N Commons has this deep wonderful voice like what is in the water in the UK?!? Where are these people coming from? And this piano is giving me LIFE. I'm not really sure about these lyrics...I can't tell if he's sacrificing himself or taunting his oppressors. He's fearless though so salute.
15. "Lost Generation" (Feat. Lupe Fiasco)
Now we're reeling it in and saying What good is flashin’ or livin' the fastest/if you in a casket? So are we ready to die or naw? I guess not lol I appreciate the devil's advocate relationship that he and Lupe are portraying...giving an angel vs. devil perspective and ending the album off with a bang. I just hope this generation understands that he was being facetious. Otherwise the plan will just backfire.
I honestly have to say that I am in love with the entire instrumental of this album. It's poetic, soothing, with just the right amount of turn up. Big K.R.I.T. told Billboard "I like to make the kind of songs that I don't hear on the radio and EQ them in a way where they might be obnoxiously loud to some people. But this is exactly how I wanted it to sound." I would have to say that he succeeded. He won me over at track one. He's the champ.
"Cadillactica" is online and in stores NOW!
