What rock have I been under that I didn't know who Kat Dahlia is?!? *wails* And she's from my home state! Florida STAND UP! She's so AMAZING! JLNKJSLHFLDKHFNIAHLNSA! Her sound is so refreshing. I listened to one track and my initial idea of doing a synopsis versus track by track was immediately thrown out the window. How could I NOT give Kat her proper dues?!?
Check out this track-by-track review of "My Garden":
Wait...my "garden" is a metaphor for her lady parts?!? LMFAO, Way to supersede being crass. I'm cryyyyying and she said I'll let your rain fall down if it sparkles like diamonds/Just let me wear the crown/My garden's appetizing. OMFG. She wins.
2. "Gangsta"
YAAASSSSSSSSSSSS for the independent women anthem! I'm from Florida. I know the struggle. Everybody trapping and rapping and think you need them for something. Naw. Move. I'm unimpressed by your impending prison sentence. It's inevitable and I refuse to live that Monica "You Shoulda Known Better" life. I wasn't built for that shit.
I'm okay with the occasional bitch but if she starts dropping f-bombs I might have to change direction. Anywho, this track is so relatable lol I think we've all gone off the deep end a little bit and we really don't know when too far has reached too far. Until we're too far gone that is...
If I closed my eyes this for real could have been Rihanna. With better vocals. It even took the rock turn that Rih was toying with a while back. Then she started sounding like Kelly Clarkson without the struggle. She better not get trapped in someone else's sound.
5. "I Think I'm In Love"
I was trying to figure out if she truly has vocals and on this track she set out to prove it to me. She can definitely hold a tune but this song she stretches it just a bit further so that we know Yes, she can sing. I would like to see her push her range a little further. *cringes* Then she drops the f bomb...
6. "Tumbao"
So this entire song is in Spanish? I support you being bilingual, Selena, but IDK WTF you're saying. Where TF are the subtitles?!? I feel like Helen Keller...
7. "Mirror"
This is without a doubt my favorite song thus far. So real. I don't know the monsters you knew/But I'm trying to forget the ones I met too/Baby, you could help me/Baby, I could help you/You look at me and you see what I see/Because you're looking in the mirror/When you're with me there's no use in hiding/Because you're looking in the mirror
It be like that sometimes, man...
8. "Lava"
OMG she for real resurrected the late, great Amy Winehouse. She absolutely embodied her spirit in this track. It sounds like something that would've been on "Back To Black". I loved me some Amy too...
9. "Walk On Water"
Okay...this is a bit too abstract for me. I looked up the lyrics and I still don't know what's going on. It sounds nice but I have no clue what she is going on about...
10. "Clocks"
I saw that her genre included "alternative R&B" and I didn't really see it but now I do. This is without a doubt alternative. It's an acquired taste for sure. I don't love it or hate it. I'm indifferent.
11. "Just Another Dude"All in all, as a whole, I enjoyed this album. Kat Dahlia is singing and lowkey rapping and I don't know what to think of it. But it just works for her. Like a younger Cuban Fergie. I definitely can't wait to hear more from her. This is a solid effort for a debut album. Hopefully, on her next album she plays with her range a little more and distinguishes her rapping from her singing so it's more cohesive. I think her sophomore effort can be amazing with the right direction.
"My Garden" is online and in stores NOW!
